Pine is the highest grade stretcher bar in our range with beatiful natural texture. It feels much heavier, smoother and free of splits, resin blisters and other defects. The "keys" or "wedges" are used along with the precisely made mitered, tongue & groove corner joints to expand the stretcher frame in very small increments to apply tension to the canvas.
The profile of our stretcher bars is beveled and tapered so that the canvas has minimal contact. A slope on the front face of the bar is to allow extra space behind the canvas and avoid unwanted contact with the wood of bar or cross brace while painting or later, as it may hang for years on the wall.
The quality of the wood used in making our stretcher bars has a major impact on the long term stability of the stretched canvas. The wood is a select high grade Pine be kiln dried to a moisture content of 8% or less.
